Mirandolina goes to Teatro La Fenice!
Martinů's 1954 comic opera Mirandolina is coming to Venice's pre-eminent Teatro La Fenice this July in a production featuring, amongst others, John Axelrod as conductor. Opening on Friday 1st July 2016, the production lasts only one week with a total of five performances.
Having received its world premiere in 1959 just a few months before Martinů's death, the three-act opera is based on Carlo Goldoni's La Locandiera or The Mistress of the Inn, probably one of his most famous plays which had been previously put to music by Antonio Salieri and Giovanni Simone Mayr. Changing the title to Mirandolina, Bohuslav Martinû composed a witty version to his own libretto in Italian.
