The Epic of Gilgamesh / Dido and Aeneas in Janáček Theatre
On 13 May 2016, the Janáček Theatre in Brno will host a premiere of a project directed by Jiří Heřman, presenting two works based on ancient myths dealing with fundamental questions: Why are we mortal and why do we lose those we love? One of them will be The Epic of Gilgamesh, H 351 by Bohuslav Martinů, inspired by what is considered to be the oldest work of literature in the world. Performed in the original English with Czech and English surtitles alongside Henry Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas based on the fourth book of Virgil’s epic The Aeneid, this project is supported by Bohuslav Martinu Foundation.
