Mirandolina opens the Year of Czech Music 2014
On 7th January 2014, Stavovské Theatre in Prague will present the opera conducted by Marko Ivanović and directed by Jiří Nekvasil, and thus will oficially launch the Year of Czech Music 2014.
The premiere of Mirandolina as staged by National Theatre of Moravia-Silesia in its original, Italian version, was held in Ostrava in December 2013.
Martinů composed it on Italian libretto inspired by Carlo Goldoni's La Locandiera from 1773. The world premiere of Bohuslav Martinů’s opera Mirandolina took place on 17 May 1959, a few months before the composer’s death, at the Smetana Theatre in Prague, in Rudolf Vonásek’s Czech translation, conducted by Václav Kašlík and with the superb Maria Tauberová portraying the titular role.
The Moravian-Silesian National Theatre in Ostrava will be staging Mirandolina for the first time in the Czech Republic to the original Italian libretto. Main roles are assigned to Kateřina Kněžíková, Eva Dřízgová - Jirušová, Luciano Mastro and Josef Moravec.
The production was created with support from the Bohuslav Martinů Foundation and is part of the Year of Czech Music (www.rokceskehudby.cz), a project with the aim to support projects promoting Czech music both at home and abroad.
