Pierre Boulez - 100th anniversary

March 26 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of composer Pierre Boulez!

In addition to his work as a composer, Boulez was also an important conductor who became famous for promoting contemporary music. In 1976, he founded the Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique (IRCAM) in Paris, which has become a major centre for research into electronic music and new technologies in composition.

It is as conductor that Boulez will be remembered on this untimely anniversary - and for Martinů's first cello concerto (H 196 III, 3rd version) with the famous Pierre Fournier as soloist in 1976.

"Bohuš did not enjoy Boulez's music, but he appreciated Boulez himself and would have liked to have met him."
- Charlotte Martiinů recalls in her book My Life with Bohuslav Martinů (Bärenreiter Prague, 2003, p. 177).

Concerto for Cello and Orchestra No. 1 will be published this year as part of the 14th volume of the Complete Works of Martinů by Bärenreiter (ed.: Giselher Schubert).
