The opera The uninhabited island was composed by Franz Joseph Haydn in 1779 to a libretto by Metastasio. This piece is a noteworthy example of his talent as a composer and his capacity to create music that evokes images and emotions. Even though the opera is not as well-known as other works by Haydn, the overture continues to be performed and appreciated as an autonomous composition representative of the most authentic classicism as a musical style.

Carl Reinecke was a Hanseatic virtuoso pianist and teacher whose performances were admired by Franz Liszt and Clara Schumann, and whose students included Liszt’s daughter Cosima (the future wife of Richard Wagner) and the young Edvard Grieg in composition. At present, Reinecke is best known for his Flute concerto in B Major, which is one of the few Romantic concertos for that instrument in concert halls’ repertoire.

The Symhony No.4 is one of the most attractive and pleasant orchestral works of Bohuslav Martinů. Dedicated to Helen and Bill Ziegler, a rich aristocratic couple of New York City, it was written in 1945 in New York, between the months of April and June. It was premiered on the 30th of November that year at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia by the city’s famous orchestra under the direction of Eugene Ormandy.
