The beauty of dance, music and singing, from the roots of the Czech tradition which we draw on. Our ballet company joins the Year of Czech Music with a work that created in the 1930s, in a time of growing totalitarianism and looming crises.
At this time, Bohuslav Martinů focused on going back to the roots, traditions and our region, where he could feel safe. The result was the first part of the Czech Theatre series, the sung ballet Špalíček (Chapbook), inspired by folk songs, nursery rhymes, games and fairy tales, inspired by Karel Jaromír Erben.
A good balance of individual storytelling can be seen, for example, in the fairy tales, Puss in Boots, The Shoemaker and Death, the legend of St. Dorothy, or Cinderella. The loosely linked tales are full of inspiring and energizing music, accompanied by ballet performances and singing by soloists and choir. The ballet is a beautiful and proud celebration of our country. It returns to Pilsen after thirty years as a fascinating source of our Czech treasures and lives.
The production was financially supported by the Bohuslav Martinů Foundation.
